X-ray Technology within the Australian Meat Industry

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), may introduce new automatic processes to Australian meat producers if the X-Ray technology is accepted by peak industry councils.

The controversial technology guarantees to supply farmers with an improved indication of the actual meat content of a carcass that may increase quality of produce and cut costs.

Several related industry groups such as Australian cattle and sheep producers, lot feeders and pork processors have publicly backed the introduction of DEXA as a result of the technology guarantees to get rid of subjective measurement, which can usually be incorrect. This promise is has been supported by proof of the technology’s performance.

A briefing organised by Meat and livestock Australia (MLA) introduced the prospect of DEXA to major red meat lobby groups. And while there has been endorsement into MLA's proposal to roll out DEXA there currently no agreement on who pays for MLA's planned introduction of the technology.

The funding of DEXA is currently being negotiated and MLA are operating with Cattle Council of Australia, Sheepmeat Council of Australia, Goat industry Council of Australia, Australian Meat processing Corporation, Australian Meat industry Council, and Australian Lot Feeders Association to determine who would be involved in the planning and financing of the new technology.

MLA are hoping for industry-wide adoption of DEXA and they aim to push the roll-out process to incorporate all those industry groups willing to get involved. Further announcements by the MLA are expected to be made as future funding and installation plans are considered.
