From the 25th of June to the 1st of July, bacon week celebrates 100% Australian bacon, while also drawing attention to the threat Australian Bacon faces from imported smallgoods.

Bacon Week is a way of spreading this knowledge about the importance of the quality in Australian Pork.

With newly imported bacon flooding the Australian market customers are often left unaware of the origins and quality of the pork they are being served as restaurants and cafes do not have to label their menus with the country of origin of their produce. The lack of labelling is making it is difficult for the industry to ascertain how much pre-cooked pork is actually entering the Australian market.

Bacon Week aims to raise awareness around the competition Aussie bacon faces from imported products by hosting an annual The Australian PorkMark Bacon Awards which serve as a highlight of the week. The awards identify and showcase the best true blue bacon. This year more than 125 bacon entries were put to the test by a specialist judging panel.

Open to butchers and smallgoods companies who make bacon and ham using Australian pork, each competition is culminated in Australia’s Bacon and Ham Weeks where various promotions are run around the country including radio campaigns featuring the overall winner.

Information, winners, participating restaurants and recipes will be available from the 25th of June on:  www.pork.com.au and www.porkbutchers.com.au
